Definition

Title truncation is when a search engine shortens a page title in the SERP display—often with an ellipsis—because the full string exceeds the available pixel width for that result.

Why truncation happens

Search result layouts have limited width. Long titles, especially on mobile, get cut. Title truncation is normal—your job is to keep the visible prefix useful.

Reduce truncation risk

  1. Put the primary topic first
  2. Cut repeated brand phrases on every URL
  3. Avoid pipe-separated keyword lists
  4. Review titles after template or CMS changes

Frequently asked questions

Does truncation hurt rankings directly?

Not by itself. It can hurt clicks if the visible portion is unclear or misleading.

Can I force Google to show my full title?

No. You can only write a clearer, tighter candidate.
